Remembering Tohoku: Looking Toward a Brighter Future
Sunday, March 11, 2012 2-4 p.m. Pavilion & Grounds Free Admission from 2-4 p.m. At 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, members and visitors to the Portland Japanese Garden will gather in the Pavilion on the first anniversary of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami to remember the victims of this terrible disaster and offer our best wishes for a brighter future for the survivors who still struggle with recovery throughout the region. Koto music by Mrs. Kozue Okabe will send a message of encouragement. In the healing environment of the Garden, the bronze temple bell will be rung at 2:46 p.m., the hour that the disaster struck. Visitors may sign a memorial book and learn about the Nozome community building project of textile artist Hiroshi Saito, who is using his art to provide relief to those still living in shelters in Tohoku. A special exhibition of Mr. Saito’s work will be on view at the Garden in June, 2012. The event is free of charge, but donations to Nozome will be gratefully accepted.
