National holidays are increasing in number. Long-time work has been recognised as a serious problem, which has made prople think again of what work should be like. Under severe compliances they cannot ignore, while faced with severe shotage of labor force, companies cannot afford to be deprived of any more of their employees' working time.

For many employees, on the other hand, reducing overtime work means reducing their income. If they have a familly to take care of, his or her money which would have been used for leisure has to be cut.

I don't think either side hopes for too much reform.

Well, this issue may be closely related to the change in the way the Japanese work.

Approx. 40% of the workforce now work parttime or irregularly.

Their wage is relatively lower than that of regular employees.

For them, the more holidays, namely, the less worktime, the less they are paid.

This can lead to the shrink of the consumers’ mind.

If they consume less, the economy won’t become active. Thus, so-called “trickle down” won’t occur.

Too many holidays may not be a panacea as プログラミンゴ criticizes.
