I don't think they should be open for 24 hours. We have too many convenience stores in Japan. Along big streets, you may see them on both sides with the distance between two of them only less than 100 meters. Different from emergency institutions like hospitals and fire stations, we can live without them, especially after midnight.
We have very excellent sellers called vending machine. Analyzing the data accumaulated so far, just the items many people would buy could be sold on the vending machine.
